Medison Celebrity $150 Laptop - Consumer Watch

Medison Europe Limited and it's owner and CEO, Valdi Ivancic, have made headlines by offering of a laptop for $150 on medisoncelebrity.com.

Is this offer too good to be true? Yes, we think so!  However, the goal of this site is to make information available to you so you can make that decision for yourself. Its creation was prompted by Medison's decision to close down its public Yahoo forum. We aim to shed some light on the Medison offer by offering you an archive of news articles and critical opinion related to the Medison company as well as report on the background and the credibility of the CEO himself.

  • The Medison Celebrity is not currently being offered for sale by 2CO.
  • That account is currently suspended.
  • The negotiations between 2CO and any of its vendors regarding their account status is not public information.
  • This suspension is the result of erroneously marking orders as shipped.
  • This was determined through the standard 2CO verifications process.
  • All orders charged due to being marked as shipped have been refunded unless specifically requested otherwise by the customer.
  • If you have not received a desired refund, please contact us as soon as possible.
  • No other orders were charged.
  • If your order was not charged, the authorization has or will soon drop off.
  • If you have an order and would like to insure that there is absolutely no chance of reauthorization, please contact us and we will cancel your order.
  • If the supplier cannot overcome the logistical difficulties or our negotiations do not succeed, no reauthorizations can even be attempted.
  • If the supplier overcomes the logistical difficulties and our negotiations succeed, those with lapsed authorizations will be contacted.

This is what we believe

  • The laptop is imaginary
  • There are no factories or assembly plants
  • There is no support organization
  • There are additional costs that are not disclosed until after purchase
  • The offer is a one-man dog and pony show
  • The CEO should not be trusted

The laptop

Critical statement Company's position
The pictures on the web site and the written specifications of the laptop was copied verbatim (including spelling mistakes) from Clevo, a laptop manufacturer which have stated they have no connection to Medison and said they will turn the matter over to their legal counsel. The Medison laptop is not a Clevo. The real manufacturer is a secret.

A single laptop has been shown to the press in August had its serial number removed. It had a czech keyboard and has been identified from pictures to be visually identical to a Clevo computer, down to the last slot and notch in the plastic cover.  Ivancic is known to have received a Czech Clevo demo unit from a European Clevo vendor. He never paid for it.

The Medison laptop is not a Clevo. The real manufacturer is a secret.
No Medison laptops have been made available for testing by service partners, tech journalists or other reviewers. n/a
The Medison order process does not provide a way of specifying which localization of the keyboard and operating system that should be installed. This means that customers in countries such as Canada, where different keyboard layouts are used, will end up with the wrong keyboard layout and the wrong language in the operating system.

Keyboard layout will be the most common one in the region of the country specified in the order.

Ivancic has said that customers are expected to email the company if they want a different keyboard from what would otherwise be provided. No email address was provided.

The laptop has no FCC approval and is thus not legal to use in the US

No FCC records are found when searching for Medison at the public FCC register at  https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/GenericSearch.cfm

End User Information and Support

Critical statement Company's position

Infocare, who has a verbal agreement with Medison to take care of their support, have said on Aug 9 that they are sceptical and have given Medison until the end of August to commit and the Infocare CEO Jim Norlander has said they look at Medison with a "sober scepticism".

Update: On September 2

Infocare's CEO Jim Norlander said they still have not signed a contract with Medison, and that the company is awaiting information from Medison how they will supply Infocare with spare parts and how large the service volume can be. Therefore Infocare will continue to take an awaiting position towards Medison, according to Norlander.

The laptop comes with 1 year warranty. The company directs customers to email Infocare
The European consumer directive stipulates a minimum two-year warranty, and Medison is in violation of this directive. The laptop comes with 1 year warranty.
Medison's Terms and conditions are in violation of Swedish consumer law. n/a
The laptop comes with no support. You can pay extra for support.
The cost listed when ordering is not the true cost of the purchase, as there are credit card charges and shipping charges which are added later and not specified.

"The only costs that adds to the price are the low fee that comes with using your card online, the delivery and if you buy extra support"

Delivery and logistics

Critical statement Company's position
No laptops have been delivered even though the deadline of 15/8 have passed and no shipping receipts or tracking numbers exist to prove any shipments have actually taken place. The delivery is delayed 2 weeks until August 31 but is still within the promised 4-6 week delivery
EMEA Services, the company which Medison claimed to be a their logistics partner, have stated they do not intend to work with Medison Medison claims to be in negotiation with several companies.
The company 2Checkout used in the ordering process for credit card processing appears to be taking a responsible approach and are offering refunds to anyone who placed an order with Medison and got cold feet before shipping. n/a

According to messages from their support staff on their web site, 2Checkout have not been dealing with Medison Europe Ltd as a company but rather with CEO Ivancic in person. This can only be said to be unusual for a company that expects to ship thousands of laptops. It's not clear if 2Checkout's statement should be interpreted as money will be sent directly to Ivancic's personal bank account or to Medison's bank account.

n/a
The cost to the end user for shipping is not known when placing the order. Preliminary web quotes from UPS indicates this could be very expensive.

The company web site says nothing about the costs.

Ivancic has said in interviews that an additional 25 Euro ($30) will be have to be paid in cash upon delivery.

Ivancic has said the laptops will be built in a secret factory in Asia and assembled in a secret assembly factory in Brazil and then shipped to the customer. This would add more shipping costs to a low-cost item and slow down the supply chain, introducing further delays on already delayed deliveries. n/a
Medison's delivery issues are discussed 2CO's support forum

Medison's CEO Ivancic has in interviews said the company has orders for 300,000 laptops, while the real number as estimated by journalists based on web usage traffic logs to be closer to a few hundred orders.

Update:  On Sep 7 business development responsible Geno Arce at 2Checkout.com stated in a Computer Sweden interview that Medison has about 7000 orders.

According to Ivancic in the Jnytt interview Medison has orders for 300,000 laptops,

Medison's CEO Ivancic has in a Jnytt interview said the company's web site has 10-15 million visit per week, making it one of the world's top-20 most visited web sites.

The web traffic logs for the site were however public at the time, and according to computer magazine IDG/pcforalla, the site has about 10,000 visitors, several orders of magnitude less than Ivancics claims.

Ivancic claims he was misquoted.

The Medison Press relations officer, Lauri Kuru, does not speak to the media and does not issue the company's press releases. He is silent. This can only be described as unusual.

Update 8/28: Lauri Kuru is no longer listed on the web page as Medison's press relations officer. It's not clear if he has been fired from the position or why else the title was removed from his name.

Medison's owner and CEO, Valdi Ivancic

Critical statement Company's position
The owner and CEO Valdo Ivancic has, in addition to running the Swedish-based Medison Consulting business, the UK-based Medison Europe Ltd and the Brazil manufacturing plants for the Celebrity laptop also applied in June 2007 for a job as Head of Tourism at a county in Sweden, as well as in August 2007 announced his plans to stand for election as Swedish Prime Minister.  n/a
Valdi Ivancic have had 5 earlier Medison companies registered, all of which are either bankrupt or dissolved.  n/a
Ivancic has claimed he has designed the "IKEA Mammoth" (IKEA Mammut) wardrobe, but according to the IKEA catalogue this is false. The Mammut wardrobe is designed by Kjelstrup and Östgaard. n/a

Contrary to Ivancic's claimed work experience, he has never been employed by Erik Dahlbergsgymnasiet, according to their administrators.

At the press conference in Stockholm, Valdi Ivancic lied on a direct question from a journalist about the laptop that was on show. The keyboard of the laptop is Czech (just like on the unpaid demo unit shipped by Clevo) and when a journalist asked about this, Valdi Ivancic said no, it's a Slovak keyboard.

This is not true.

Thanks to Tommy Truthseeker, you can easily verify this yourself:

Picture of the keyboard from the press conference unit   http://ftp.idg.se/pfa/medison/medison2.jpg
Picture of a Czech keyboard layout
http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/keyboards/kbdcz1.htm

Picture of a Slovak keyboard layout : http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/keyboards/kbdsl1.htm

Compare the national keys close to the Enter key and you'll see quickly that the unit shown to the press had a Czech keyboard layout, even though Ivancic denied this when asked.

In the press conf, Valdi said the laptop has a Slovak keyboard.

Is it a scam?

You decide. We think there is wisdom in the saying "do not attribute to malice what can be attributed to stupidity".
